Former Smallville actress Allison Mack, 35, was released to the custody of her parents in exchange for $5 million bail.
Mack was arrested for allegedly sex trafficking women for the cult NXIVM. She was charged on Friday with sex trafficking, sex trafficking conspiracy and conspiracy to commit forced labor but has been released to her parents. Judge Victor Pohorelsky said Mack would be allowed to travel to for court appearances, attorney meetings and other approved reasons. She isn’t allowed to use a cell phone or the internet while she’s at home and will be monitored electrically. She’s also prohibited from communicating with former or current members of NXIVM.
An unsealed indictment stated Mack recruited women under the guise of joining a “women-only organization that would empower them and eradicate purported weaknesses.” The women were “exploited sexually and for their labor.”
Mack is facing 15 years in prison but reports claim her lawyers are working on a plea deal.
The group recently posted a statement on NXVIM’s website stating their leader Keith Raniere is innocent. “In response to the allegations against our founder, Keith Raniere, we are currently working with the authorities to demonstrate his innocence and true character,” it stated. “We strongly believe the justice system will prevail in bringing the truth to light.” The leader was arrested in Mexico and authorities allege his initials were branded on the women with the help of Mack.
Mack next court date is May 3.
