Anissa Weier, 13, and Morgan Geyser, 12, the suspects in the Slender Man stabbing case in Waukesha County, Wis., will undergo juvenile evaluations.
Circuit Judge Michael Bohren, upon hearing a request for juvenile evaluations from Weier and Geyser’s attorneys, ordered that they be done, reported the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. In effect, the order will mandate Waukesha County’s Department of Health and Human Services to evaluate the girls as though they were in juvenile court.
Weier and Geyser were charged with first-degree attempted intentional homicide as adults, but their lawyers want them to be able to get whatever services they might need that would be available to juvenile suspects.
Assistant District Attorney Kevin Osborne argued against the juvenile evaluations, claiming that Bohren was not authorized to order them. According to Osborne, such evaluations could only be ordered when defendants are being tried in juvenile court. Bohren, however, sided with the defense attorney’s reasoning, believing that information gleaned during the evaluations could be pivotal in the case. The evaluations might even make the case for him to move the case against Weier and Geyser out of adult court.
Weier and Geyser will have reverse waiver hearings later this month, at which time it will be determined if the case should be transferred to juvenile court.
On May 31, 2014, Weier and Geyser attacked their fellow classmate Payton Leutner, stabbing her 19 times. Upon their arrest, the middle school students claimed that they committed the act to appease fictional Internet character Slender Man, whom they believed had the power to kill them and their loved ones.
Since their arrest, Geyser has been diagnosed with schizophrenia and spent four months in a mental health facility.
