Singer and songwriter Sophie B. Hawkins gave birth to her second child earlier this week at age 50.
Hawkins welcomed a baby girl on Tuesday, July 7 at 4:49 p.m. at New York Presbyterian Hospital Weill Cornell Campus, People reported. Hawkins named her daughter, who weighed 8 lbs. at birth, Esther Ballantine Hawkins.
Hawkins announced that she was expecting again back in February. She explained at the time that she’d decided to move forward with a second pregnancy in order to give her 6-year-old son Dashiell a sibling.
“I found Dashiell really needs a sibling,” she told People. “My son has one parent who’s 50. I want him to have a family of young people too!”
Hawkins admitted that the decision to take on another pregnancy at 50 worried her mother, but that she knew she wanted to do it, and had a gut feeling she’d get the daughter she’d always wanted.
“Even my mother thought I was a cockeyed optimist. ‘I’ll support you emotionally, but I don’t think it’s a good idea,’ she cautioned,” Hawkins wrote on her blog, adding of her daughter, “I knew she would come, if I could get out of her way. That was my struggle, not the question, but the surety.”
