Grammy-winning singer Macy Gray was rushed to a hospital in Colombia after experiencing severe side effects from the weight-loss drug Ozempic during filming of MTV’s The Surreal Life: Villa of Secrets.
The 56-year-old “I Try” vocalist, who had previously disclosed struggles with constipation caused by the medication, reported difficulty breathing and mobility issues while participating in the reality show.
“I’m finding it hard to catch my breath,” Gray told producers. “Being in Colombia, I want to give it my all, but I feel terrible.”
As her condition worsened, Gray expressed concern about her inability to walk without becoming winded. The show’s medical staff evaluated her condition and recommended immediate hospital care.
“Your medication can affect your pancreas,” the on-set medic informed Gray. “Your pancreas isn’t able to defend itself properly.”
Fellow cast member Chet Hanks later informed the other participants about Gray’s hospitalization, noting her recent lack of appetite. X Factor alumna Ally Brooke attributed Gray’s symptoms to Ozempic, saying she had witnessed similar effects among friends.
“I’m aware of the Ozempic trend and have heard about the side effects Macy is experiencing,” Brooke said in a confessional interview. “I really feel for her.”
Ozempic, which contains the active ingredient semaglutide, is primarily prescribed for diabetes management but has gained popularity as a weight-loss aid. The drug works by mimicking a hormone that signals fullness, thereby suppressing appetite and slowing digestion.
However, medical experts warn that Ozempic can trigger a physiological response known as the gastrocolic reflex. This reflex can cause the body to rapidly empty the contents of the colon and rectum, potentially leading to severe diarrhea if digestion is incomplete.
