Sinbad works on recovery from stroke (Image: A Journey Forward)
Family members of comedian Sinbad, who suffered an ischemic stroke in October 2020, have revealed that he is still progressing in his route to recovery.
Born David Adkins, the comedian became a well-known name in the 1990s when he was featured on his own HBO specials.
In a statement on social media, Adkins’ family shared, “[Adkins] continues to receive therapy, fighting for every inch.”
The statement continued, “Limbs that were said to be ‘dead’ are coming alive, and he’s taking the steps necessary to learn to walk again.”
Adkins’ stroke was due to a blood clot from his heart that traveled to his brain; after two successful surgeries for blood clots, doctors found that Adkins’ brain had started to swell and determined that a craniotomy was needed to remedy the problem. During the surgery, doctors found a bleed, and Adkins was soon hooked up to a ventilator and placed in a medically induced coma. He returned to his home nine months later, in July 2021. He has made small progress in his recovery, but the odds of survival for someone in such a condition is roughly 30%.
“[We believe] without exception, Sinbad is here because of the multitude of prayers from all who know and love him,” Adkins family wrote.
They assured, “We are eternally grateful for every outpouring of love and the memories of how he has touched all of you have not gone unheard, unseen, or unfelt. Thank you. You have lifted his spirits along the way and inspired the entire family.”
Adkins’ family has asked the public for help paying the comedian’s medical bills, introducing a website on which to donate, TheJourneyForward.life.
