Simon Cowell will not serve as a judge again for the new American Idol show on ABC.
Earlier this month it was announced that season 1 winner Kelly Clarkson will be a judge alongside Katy Perry. “I don’t really have any involvement in that show, other than my time spent on it,” Cowell said in an interview. “I doubt very much I would ever be involved in that show again. The thing about that show was, sometimes you just create magic without realizing you’re creating it, whether it was the producers, the judges, the host – everything just worked.”
Cowell continued by saying that the original Idol was what it was because of the people involved. He joined the show for its first season in 2002 with fellow longtime judges Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson. “And one by one they left and you could feel it coming,” Cowell said. “It was like because there is not much of a format with Idol, for me, Idol is a memory, a great memory at the beginning.”
Cowell currently serves as a judge on NBC’s America’s Got Talent, which he believes should get some recognition from the Emmys. It appears to bother him that The Voice gets multiple nods each year, while AGT fights for breathing room. “I watched a couple of episodes [of AGT] last year, and I’m not trying to be biased, but I genuinely thought this was the best TV I’d seen probably in all the years I’ve done it,” he said.
