'Shutter Island' Shuts Out Competition

Martin Scorsese‘s Shutter Island, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, easily took the No. 1 position at the weekend box office, beating out last week’s winner Valentine’s Day, which fell 69 percent from its debut. Roman Polanski‘s thriller The Ghost Writer averaged an impressive $13,440 per screen in limited release in New York and L.A. Meanwhile, Avatar upped its domestic total to $687.8 million.
