Sex and the City 2 and Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time disappointed as Shrek Forever After continues to reign the box office this past weekend.

The quirky SATC sequel, starring Sarah Jessica Parker (pictured), mustered roughly $37 million in its opening weekend, totaling to $51.4 million since its Thursday debut. Compare this to its predecessor’s $57 million opening last year, it seems as though the sequel is barely living up to the hype. The film has received poor reviews by both fans and movie critics.

Prince of Persia didn’t fare much better; the Disney film featuring Jake Gyllenhaal finished third and underperformed with $37.8 million this weekend despite its $200 million budget.

Shrek grossed $55.7 million, dropping 21.3 percent from its $70.8 million performance last weekend, though it is unaccounted if hiked up ticket prices for the 3D exhibition was factored in against its competitions.

This Memorial Day weekend was the lowest-grossing in nine years and the slowest in at least 15 years in terms of estimated attendance.
