Shonda Rhimes
Shonda Rhimes produced the Hillary biographical short film, which introduced presidential candidate Hillary Clinton at the Democratic National Convention on Thursday night — Rhimes opened up about creating the film and how it came to be in a new interview.
“I wanted everyone who sees it to feel like they were sitting with a friend, drinking coffee, so that had to be authentic,” Rhimes told People.
The 12-minute short film focuses on Clinton’s life and career — highlighting her role as a children’s advocate, her work for women and the disabled, her accomplishments as First Lady, Secretary of State and Senator of New York.
Hillary was narrated by actor Morgan Freeman and featured testimonials from President Barack Obama, her husband and former president Bill Clinton and even her longtime childhood best friend Betsy Ebeling.
Rhimes, the creator of hit ABC dramas Scandal and Grey’s Anatomy, admitted that producing this short film was different than anything she’s done before.
“As a writer who builds characters for a living, it was exciting to take an actual human being and pieces of who she is and see how it builds a person and her character, why she is who she is,” Rhimes explained.
“It was invigorating,” the producer added. “The geeky student in me who loves doing homework and research, I got to immerse myself in photos and articles. I’ve spent more time on Hillary Clinton’s Flickr page than any other human being on the planet.”
Rhimes shared that she was actually headed on a vacation before she received a call from the Clinton campaign, asking her to put together Clinton’s DNC video.
“I was going away for three weeks, the first time in 12 years,” Rhimes remarked.
However, when asked what Clinton thought of the final presentation, Rhimes made it clear that Clinton’s response was special.
“No comment. I’m going to hold that one close,” Rhimes said.
