Actor turned activist and provocateur Shia LaBeouf got into a shouting match with a white supremacist while on camera for his four-year livestream protest of Donald Trump.
LaBeouf and Jaden Smith created this idea, which is manifested in a 24/7 accessible live stream camera set up in front of New York’s Museum of the Moving Image. The project invites participants “to deliver the words ‘He will not divide us’ into a camera… repeating the phrase as many times, and for as long as they wish,” explains the live stream website. “In this way, the mantra ‘He will not divide us’ acts as a show of resistance or insistence, opposition or optimism, guided by the spirit of each individual participant and the community.”
On Monday, a young man walked past the camera and said “14, 88,” two numbers that are commonly associated with white supremacy. The man walked past again and said, “we must ensure the existence of the white people” – and then LaBeouf was seen on camera, shouting “He will not divide us” into the young man’s ear. The man, wearing a gray military cap, replied but his words were drowned out by LaBeouf’s and the crowd’s chants.
