Shia LaBeouf, handcuffed and crying, was removed from a showing of Cabaret at New York’s Studio 54 and arrested after disrupting the performance Thursday night.
LaBeouf, 28, has been charged with criminal trespass and disorderly conduct for the scene he caused at the Broadway theater, reported CNN. During the first act of the show, the Transformers actor reportedly lit up a cigarette and was using obscene language. Police believe that he was intoxicated.
Due to his recent string of performance art, which followed the news he’d allegedly plagiarized a graphic novel for a short film, some theatergoers are convinced it was all another act. "He was brilliant," one member of the audience told CNN. "I thought he was working on a role or something."
Adding to the eyewitness’ theory was LaBeouf’s costume and general behavior. Apparently, he was stumbling about the theater in a torn shirt, puffing away on a cigarette and engaging with the audience. He allegedly made a show of feeding a strawberry to a woman waiting for a drink at the theater bar and tipping the bartender.
Back in January, LaBeouf wrote on Twitter – in reference to the plagiarism scandal – "In light of the recent attacks against my artistic integrity, I am retiring from all public life." A month later, LaBeouf declared, "I am not famous anymore" and wore a brown paper bag emblazoned with the declaration to the Nymphomaniac premiere at the Berlin Film Festival. In March, LeBeouf dropped out of the star-studded Barry Levinson comedy Rock the Kasbah.
LaBeouf doesn't have any future projects lined up. However, he'll be seen in David Ayer's World War II picture Fury later this year.
