‘She-Hulk’ Creators Respond To Criticism Of Lead Character’s CGI Depiction

While fans are excited for the coming premiere of the new series She-Hulk: Attorney At Law which stars Tatiana Maslany, some have been dissatisfied with some of the visual effects on display.

With both She-Hulk and Smart Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) appearing in every episode this show, it required even heavier computer graphics work to develop their characters on top of already effects-laden Marvel shows.

Several of the creatives behind the series gave their take on the CGI criticism at a recent press panel at the Television Critics Association. Kat Coiro, who directed most of the series, said the criticism of how Maslany’s character looks “has to do with our culture’s belief in its ownership of women’s bodies.”

“There’s a lot of talk about her body time, and we based it on Olympian athletes and not bodybuilders. But I think if we had gone the other way, we would be facing the same critique. I think it’s very hard to win when you make women’s bodies,” Coiro observed.

They also touched on recent stories of how Marvel Visual Effects artists are made to work insanely high hours and make last-minute changes that can result in subpar results even if you have the most talented artists.

She-Hulk’s showrunner Jessica Gao expressed solidarity with FX workers saying, “It’s terrible that a lot of artists feel rushed and feel that the workload is too massive. I think everybody on this panel stands in solidarity with all workers.”

Maslany, who was also present at the panel, said “I feel incredibly deferential to how talented these artists are and how quickly they have to work.”

She admitted that big effects shots are getting less time “than probably should be given to them in terms of like, churning these things out. We have to be super-conscious of the work conditions, which aren’t always optimal.”
