U.S. men’s snowboarding star Shaun White earned a spot in the halfpipe final at Sochi 2014 on Tuesday.
Coming out of the first two qualifying runs, White had the high score of 95.75. He’ll be joined in the final by fellow Americans Danny Davis and Greg Bretz. Japan’s Taku Hiraoka and Ayumu Hirano, Switzerland’s Christian Haller and David Habluetzel all automatically advanced after placing in the top three of their heats.
Prior to the qualifying runs, it was uncertain if the event could go on as planned, as the unseasonably warm weather threatened the conditions of the halfpipe. The bottom of the pipe, according to the athletes was dangerously bumpy.
Davis, who called the course “garbage,” told Yahoo Sports, “It's the Olympics. It should be flawless. What a lame showcase of snowboarding, and what a lame way to treat the athletes."
Despite the less than ideal halfpipe, Davis will be competing alongside White later today for the gold medal. If White nabs the gold, he will become the first American male to place first in the same event in three consecutive Winter Games.
Earlier in Sochi 2014, White pulled himself out of the snowboarding slopestyle event due to a wrist injury, which caused some controversy. He decided he’d rather save himself for the halfpipe, than risk further injury in the new Olympic event.
