A Sharknado sequel was pretty much a given following the success of the made-for-TV Syfy movie that premiered in July. After enlisting the movie’s avid Twitter fan base to come up a title for next summer’s sequel, the niche network landed on Sharknado 2: The Second One.
“Since Twitter played such a huge role in the success of the original movie, we wanted to use that platform to ask our fans to name Sharknado 2,” said Thomas Vitale, executive VP of programming at Syfy. “This response is another reminder of how Sharknado has become a pop culture phenomenon. We want to thank all our viewers for their wonderful contributions to keeping up the shark-mentum.”
After Syfy handed over the titling reins to social media’s Sharknado fans, they received over 5,000 submissions. Syfy ultimately had the final say, believing that The Second One was the most apt. Rejected titles included, Sharknado 2: The Great White Way and Sharknado 2: The Sharkening.
Sharknado 2: The Second One will premiere on Syfy July 2014, with filming commencing this fall. Like the first, it will star Ian Ziering and Tara Reid. Unlike the first, it’ll be set in New York City.
