Sharknado 2: The Second One moves the action of the first film from Los Angeles to New York City, where a fresh batch of shark-filled tornados rampage the metropolis.
Executive producer and director Anthony C. Ferrante explained why they decided to shift the faux natural disaster to the East Coast and opened up about the creative process behind the Syfy project at NBCUniversal’s Summer Press Day on Tuesday.
"If we stayed in Los Angeles, it would've been boring, but we went to New York and we have a whole new set of tinker toys," said Ferrante, adding, “We're trying to perfect the tornado on this one even more because we're trying to make it more of a character.”
The way Ferrante approaches putting together a Sharknado movie is a bit different. He doesn’t want it to look – or sound – like it's taking itself seriously in any way. In fact, he proudly says that the script is like an “11-year-old” wrote it. “You're making a movie called Sharknado and if you don't embrace it you end up with a movie that's not fun," explained Ferrante.
30 Rock’s Judah Friedlander, one of the many new faces on board for the Sharknado sequel, joked about the movie’s real stars. “Some of the top shark actors in the world [will be in Sharknado 2]. Some came from overseas, some trained at the Royal Academy in London."
Sharknado 2: The Second One, which returns both Ian Ziering and Tara Reid, will premiere on Syfy Thursday, July 30 at 9/8c.
