Shannen Doherty Dies At 53 After Years-Long Battle With Cancer

Shannen Doherty has died at 53 after a long battle with cancer.

“It is with a heavy heart that I confirm the passing of actress Shannen Doherty,” the star’s publicist, Leslie Sloane, said in a statement on Sunday. “On Saturday, July 13, she lost her battle with cancer after many years of fighting the disease.”

“The devoted daughter, sister, aunt and friend was surrounded by her loved ones as well as her dog, Bowie,” Sloane continued. “The family asks for their privacy at this time so they can grieve in peace.”

Doherty was best known for her role as Brenda Walsh in the original Beverly Hills, 90210 series, which premiered in 1990. She left the show in 1994, though she went on to make several guest appearances on the 2008 reboot, 90210.

The show catapulted her into fame, as she was cast as Prue Halliwell in the hit series Charmed in 1998. She went on to direct several episodes before exiting the show in 2001. She had a stint in reality television with her Breaking Up with Shannen Doherty series and was even a contestant on Dancing with the Stars.

Doherty spoke candidly about her breast cancer battle since her diagnosis in 2015. Though she announced her remission in 2017, the cancer returned in 2019. In 2020, Doherty revealed she had stage 4 metastatic breast cancer. The disease spread to her brain last June and to her bones that November.

“I’m not done with living. I’m not done with loving. I’m not done with creating. I’m not done with hopefully changing things for the better,” she told People at the time. “I’m just – I’m not done.”

Despite her many surgeries and treatments, Doherty was determined to live her life to the fullest extent while battling the disease.

“People just assume that it means you can’t walk, you can’t eat, you can’t work. They put you out to pasture at a very early age – ‘You’re done, you’re retired,’ and we’re not,” she told the outlet. “We’re vibrant, and we have such a different outlook on life. We are people who want to work and embrace life and keep moving forward.”

Doherty is survived by her brother, Sean Doherty.
