Shailene Woodley was cut fromthe cast of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 in an effort to streamline the film.

Woodley, who filmed about three scenes as Peter Parker’s (Andrew Garfield) future love-interest and wife Mary Jane Watson, had her scenes taken out of the film so that her storyline could begin in the series’ third installment instead.

Director Marc Webb explained that he made the decision to cut Woodley because he wanted to focus on the relationship between Parker and Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone). “I made a creative decision to streamline the story and focus on Peter and Gwen,” Webb told the Hollywood Reporter. "Shailene is an incredibly talented actress, and while we only shot a few scenes with Mary Jane, we all love working with her.”

Woodley, 21, was upset but understanding about the move. “Of course I'm bummed,” she told Entertainment Weekly. “MJ [Mary Jane] only appeared in a few scenes and I wouldn’t trade the experience of working with Andrew and Emma for three days on set for the world. Based on the proposed plot, I completely understand the need for holding off on introducing MJ until the next film.”

The third and fourth installments of the films are scheduled for release in June 2016 and May 2018, respectively. It is unclear whether Woodley will return to reprise the role or it will be recast.

Woodley is best known for her role as George Clooney’s daughter in the film The Descendants. She was also recently cast as Hazel Grace Lancaster in the film adaptation of the novel The Fault In Our Stars by John Green.
