Seth Rogen spoke on Howard Stern‘s SiriusXM show regarding the comments Katherine Heigl made following the release of Judd Apatow‘s Knocked Up.
The film was “a little sexist,” Heigl declared in a 2008 interview. “It paints the women as shrews, as humorless and uptight, and it paints the men as lovable, goofy, fun-loving guys.” Heigl faced widespread criticism following this comment, which was taken out of an interview in which she claimed that the movie was, “amazing” 98% of the time.”
Rogen, a self-proclaimed egomaniac, was hurt by Heigl’s words, which he assumed meant she hated him and Apatow. Rogen had very different thoughts following filming. “Honestly, I was like I would make a dozen movies with her,” he told Stern. “It would be like whatever the sh–ty version of Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan is. I thought oh we have a great dynamic, people seem to like it, we were funny together, I was having a very good time.”
Rogen says the actors still have not spoken since they awkwardly ran into each other at a restaurant some time after Heigl’s 2008 interview. He also joked that Heigl had never called him or Apatow to apologize, rather did so via a public platform, saying, “I usually do the exact opposite. I want as few people as possible to know I’m apologizing to someone.”
While this so-called feud has lasted eight years, some people don’t think Heigl should have apologized for her statement. “The fact that a woman’s career disintegrated after she accurately pointed out an example of Hollywood sexism,” commented an article in New York Magazine, “just a few years before gender discrimination became a major industry talking point, seems like the real crime here — not hurting Seth Rogen’s feelings.”
In any case, following Rogen’s interview with Stern, it seems that the long-standing feud has come to a close. “I would imagine that my reaction was more of surprise,” Rogen said upon reflection, “and I was probably confused about what the f–k was happening.”
