Late Night host Seth Meyers responded to an email from Speaker of the House Paul Ryan, who had criticized the host for his segment on the GOP health care bill.
Meyers concluded that the GOP acted hypocritically in the way they handled the new bill. “I wish someone would just tell Paul Ryan that we shouldn’t pass bills we haven’t read and don’t know what they cost,” Meyers says before playing a clip of Ryan himself saying just that. “Everything that Paul Ryan claimed to hate about the Obamacare process in 2009, he’s doing now. Republicans are lying through their teeth about the impacts of the bill and premiums and pre-existing conditions and hoping no one will catch them.”
Ryan’s office reportedly sent Meyers an email “taking issue” with the show’s analysis of the health care bill. In response, Late Night invited Ryan to come on the show and discuss the bill with Meyers.
“We genuinely appreciate the engagement and would love to have Speaker Ryan on the show,” Meyers said. He then went on to highlight key parts of the email and respond to them on his show.
