Seth MacFarlane, Family Guy creator, is set to host the Oscars Sunday night, and has some worrying that his sense of humor might not match that of the FCC's.
MacFarlane’s trio of hit animated comedy series includes Family Guy, The Cleveland Show and American Dad. The jokes featured on his shows are known for pushing the envelope on what’s appropriate for TV. MacFarlane certainly straddles the line of acceptable humor – airing jokes about incest, disabilities, religion and bestiality. Needless to say, the Oscar host has a nemesis in the Parents Television Council.
“This is the man that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has selected to host next year’s Oscars telecast, following in the footsteps of such Hollywood legends as Bob Hope and Johnny Carson?" asked PTC president Tim Winter, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
MacFarlane’s goal for hosting Hollywood’s biggest night is to find a good balance between catering to family friendly programming while still keeping his edge. "If it's too soft I'm going to disappoint a lot of my fan base, if it's too hard I'm going to lose that room," MacFarlane told ABC News' Barbara Walters.
If his performance announcing the nominees for the 85th Academy Awards is any indication, it’s going to be a nail biter for the ABC network. "In the less than 10 minutes it took to announce the nominees, MacFarlane managed to insult his co-presenter, belittle the achievements of several nominees and make a Hitler joke," Slate wrote. And that was just his warmup.
