Sergio Garcia aired his grievances against Tiger Woods on Sunday, the final day on the green at The Players Championship in Ponte Vedre Beach, Fla.
Playing to break out of a three-way tie for the win, Garcia said of Woods, “I’m not going to lie, he’s not my favorite guy to play with. He’s not the nicest guy on tour,” according to ESPN. Swedish golfer David Lingmerth was the third competitor locked in the tie.
Garcia felt that it was a good thing that he and Woods were not paired in the same group during the final round of The Players Championship. “It’s good for both of us,” Garcia told the Golf Channel. “We don’t enjoy each other’s company You don’t have to be a rocket engineer to figure that out.” Woods was less openly averse to Garcia, stating, “It doesn't matter. I'm tied for the lead. I'm right there and I'm playing well. I'm going to go back to the hotel, get some rest and get back at it in the afternoon.''
Woods and Garcia finished 11-under par, at 205 strokes apiece when the third round was delayed until Sunday due to Saturday's weather.
Part of Garcia’s aggravation with Woods had to do with an incident that occurred early in the third round, when Woods caused a commotion that he felt hurt his shot. Woods was 50 yards away from Garcia when he pulled a 5-wood out of his bag – an action that elicited cheers from the crowd. The noise, according to Garcia, occurred while he was in his backswing, although playback of the scene shows that he was just standing over the ball.
When Woods heard of Garcia’s complaints via the media, he again chose to be diplomatic. “There wasn’t a whole lot of conversation between us,” he said.
Woods ultimately won the 2013 Players Championship. He last won the Players in 2001; Garcia’s last win in the tournament was in 2008.
