Sergei Polunin, a Ukrainian-born dancer, stars in Irish singer-songwriter Hozier’s latest music video for his hit single “Take Me to Church.”
Polunin, 25, dances throughout the video in a gutted church. Sunlight pours in through the windows, as he delivers a stunning ballet performance. He pirouettes and leaps across the scuffed floor boards, giving an emotional interpretation of Hozier’s song, which speaks out against oppression, particularly that of the LGBT community.
The music video was directed by David LaChapelle.
Polunin has been dancing since he was four-years-old and training at a gymnastics academy. When he was eight, he started training with the Kyiv State Choreographic Institute. By age 13, he had joined the British Royal Ballet School. He’s currently the principal dancer with The Stanislavsky Music Theater in Russia and performs with Russia’s Novosibirsk State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre.
In addition to music videos, Polunin’s ballet fame has seen him star in Marc Jacobs modeling campaigns and photoshoots by Gus Van Sant.
