Serena Williams is one step closer to keeping her champion status after defeating France’s Aravane Rezai 6-3, 3-6, and 6-1 in the first round at Wimbledon on Tuesday.

With serious injuries preventing her from playing for much of the past year – a period she called a “disaster year” – Williams did not expect to compete in the tournament at all, let alone win. Though it is still early in the tournament, she he broke down into unexpected post-victory tears. "I usually don't cry," she said. "I don't understand it. I never dreamt I'd be here right now.”
