Serena Williams ended her run at this year’s Wimbledon tournament today after being beaten by Sabine Lisicki. Lisicki, a German player, beat Williams 6-2, 1-6, 6-4, effectively ending Williams’ 34-match winning streak.
Williams, fresh from her win at the French Open, ranked number one in women’s singles, returned to Wimbledon this year as the reigning champion. Still, she was gracious when asked about her loss to Lisicki, who is ranked twenty-third.
“She [Lisicki] is a great player. Her ranking has no effect on what she should be. She should be ranked higher. She just has a super, super game to play well on grass,” Williams told reporters, according to Sports Illustrated.
Lisicki, known for her serve, was equally admiring when talking about her opponent.
“I just was fighting for every point no matter what was happening out there. Serena’s a very tough player. That’s why she is No. 1 in the world. I’m just so glad that I could pull off the win,” Lisicki said.
This is the third time in a row that Lisicki has beaten the French Open champion at Wimbledon, reported USA Today.
