Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) said that Donald Trump’s denial of a sexual relationship with adult film actress Stormy Daniels is comical.
“I think everybody has made their own assessment of President Trump’s character. And so far as I know, you don’t pay someone $130,000 not to have sex with you,” Romney wryly remarked to CNN.
Michael Cohen, Trump’s personal attorney, clandestinely paid Daniels $130,000 by mortgaging his home ten days before the 2016 election to ensure her silence on the alleged liaison with Trump. Subsequently, Daniels divulged to 60 Minutes the details of her affair with Trump in a hotel suite after they met at a celebrity golf tournament held at Lake Tahoe in 2006.
Trump later denied any sexual involvement with Daniels, deployed his legal team to issue threats of litigation and cited violations of a confidentiality agreement. Nevertheless, Romney, a prominent critic of Trump, who himself contended as the Republican presidential nominee in 2012 and announced his decision to forgo re-election to the Senate last year, expressed his belief in Daniels’s account.
The affair and the concealed payment to Daniels is the focal point of the legal case initiated by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg (D), who charged Trump with violation of New York’s legislation against falsification of business records.
In the ongoing trial, jurors were presented with the testimony of David Pecker, the former publisher of the National Enquirer. Pecker acknowledged he made a pledge to Trump during his presidential campaign and assured him that he would procure potentially detrimental stories about the candidate to prevent them from reaching the public eye.
Romney has never been a fan of Trump. In December, he stated that if Trump and Joe Biden end up on the final ballot, he hasn’t out-ruled voting for Biden.
He told Meet the Press, “I think we agree that we have looked at his behavior, and his behavior suggests that this is a person who will impose his will, if he can, on the judicial system, on the legislative branch, and on the entire nation.”
Romney continued, “I mean when he called people to come to Washington, D.C., on January 6, that was not a random date. That was the date when the peaceful transfer of power was to occur — he called that on purpose.”
