‘Selma’ And ‘Jane The Virgin’ Shake Up Golden Globe Nominations [Full List]

The nominations for the 2015 Golden Globes were announced early Thursday, with Birdman leading the pack with seven nominations and surprise nominations for Selma director Ava DuVernay and Jane The Virgin‘s Gina Rodriguez.

Alejandro G Inarritu’s Birdman swept up nominations in most of the Motion Picture categories, earning nods for actors Michael Keaton, Edward Norton and Emma Stone as well for nominations for Best Picture – Musical or Comedy, Best Director and Best Screenplay.

Though most of the Motion Picture nominations were expected – both Boyhood and The Imitation Game earned five nominations each in the Drama category, with Foxcatcher and The Theory of Everything close behind – there were a few surprises courtesy of the to-be-released Selma, which earned nominations for Best Director and Best Actor in a Drama for David Oyelowo.

Ava DuVernay Nominated For Best Director

Selma director Ava DuVernay is the only woman nominated in the Best Director category. She is also the first woman of color to be nominated in the category and the fifth woman to be nominated in the category since its inception in 1943 – only one has ever won.

In television, HBO earned a slew of nominations for its original programming, most notably for True Detective – stars Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson will face off in the Best Actor in a TV Movie or Mini-series. Fargo stars Martin Freeman and Billy Bob Thornton are also both nominated in that category, making it almost exclusively a Fargo vs. True Detective showdown.

Jane The Virgin Breaks The CW Awards Curse

In an exciting move, the Golden Globes has nominated The CW’s breakout comedy Jane the Virgin for Best TV Series – Musical or Comedy. Jane the Virgin’s charismatic leading lady, Gina Rodriguez was also nominated for Best Actress in a TV Series – Comedy or Musical.
