Selena Quintanilla was killed in 1995 during a dispute with her manager. But 23 years later, interested in the Tejano singer has yet to die out. Jennifer Lopez played her in the 1997 movie, Selena, and Kim Kardashian dressed up as her in 2017. Despite an increasing number of celebrity cosmetic collections, Selena’s still remains the best selling of all time. It’s only the next logical step that Netflix is creating a miniseries for the unlikely mainstream star.

Selena: The Series will be a “coming of age story” according to Netflix. An episode count was not given, nor was casting or premiere dates announced. Fans are currently speculating about the episode length and if it will be a half hour or hour runtime.

There’s been a long history of the entertainment industry profiting off of Selena against the Quintanilla family’s wishes. There was even a previous series that sparked a feud between the elder Quintanilla and Selena’s widower, Chris Perez, who tried to film a television series based off of his memoir. This series will buck that trend.

Selena’s sister, Suzette, as well as her father Abraham Quintanilla Jr. will be executive producers for the series. In a statement, Suzette said, “Selena will always have a lasting place in music history and we feel great responsibility to do justice to her memory. With this series, viewers will finally get the full history of Selena, our family, and the impact she has had on all of our lives. We are excited to partner with Campanario and Netflix to give fans a never-before-seen glimpse at our story and highlight why Selena will remain a legend for generations to come.”

Campanario Entertainment president Jaime DavilaMoisés ZamoraRico Martinez and Simran  Singh will also executive produce.

“Selena and the entire Quintanilla family are an inspiration to many and especially to me, a millennial of the same heritage,” Davila said. “Selena’s career achievements are legendary, but our scripted series will focus on the incredible story of a Mexican-American family and how an extraordinary young woman transcended categories and borders to become a global star. I can’t imagine a better partner than Netflix to celebrate Selena and her family’s lives,”
