Selena Quintanilla Honored With A Star On The Hollywood Walk Of Fame

Twenty years after her death, Mexican-American singer Selena Quintanilla will be honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

The unveiling of the star will take place on Nov. 3. Her sister Suzette Quintanilla Arriaga will join Hollywood Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Leron Gubler for the ceremony. A second ceremony will take place that night introducing that day as “Selena Day” by the Mayor of Los Angeles Eric Garcetti and actress Eva Longoria.

Selena was known as by her fans as the “Queen of Tejano music.” In March 1995, Selena was fatally shot by the president of her fan club, Yolanda Saldívar. Saldívar was in charge of Selena’s boutiques and reportedly was going to be fired because she was allegedly embezzling money.

After her death, her last record had been released, which became a No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 chart. Selena is known for her songs “Dreaming of You,” “Bidi Bidi Bom Bom” and “Baila Esta Cumbia.”

Selena was a highly respected artist and loved by many. “Selena is one of the most influential music icons of the 20th century; her music, style and smile are timeless and now her star will grace our city forever.” Otto Padron, president of Meruelo Media and the official sponsor of the tribute, said in a statement.

“Selena deserves a star,” Edward James Olmos said in an interview with Variety. “Her music stands the test of time. She was a brilliant artist. I just wish she were here. It’s not fair.”
