Selena Gomez, the singer and Emmy-nominated star of Only Murders in the Building, took to TikTok on July 27 to address speculation about her appearance. Responding to a video on the platform, Gomez, 32, clarified that she has not undergone plastic surgery, stating, “Honestly I hate this. I have Botox. That’s it. Leave me alone.”
The comment was made on a video posted by Marissa Barrionuevo, a plastic surgeon assistant from Florida. Barrionuevo, known for her educational content on various cosmetic procedures, often speculates about the work celebrities might have had done. However, in the case of Gomez, she did not make any guesses. Instead, she mentioned that Gomez’s lupus diagnosis could be a factor in the changes to her appearance.
“I literally have no idea what she has gotten done,” Barrionuevo said in the video. “I think she’s been through so much in her life, especially medically related, so I don’t think it’s fair to speculate whether or not she’s gotten cosmetic things done. At the end of the day, let’s just leave her be.”
Following Gomez’s response, Barrionuevo recorded another TikTok to address the situation and apologize. In the caption of her new video, she wrote, “Although I always try to lead with grace and mindfulness, I am sorry this upset you (and I understand why it did). I decided to stop making videos like this last year because of the negative impact it can cause. It was never my intention. ily I hope we can move past this and be besties.”
In the follow-up video, Barrionuevo expressed empathy for Gomez, acknowledging the singer’s right to privacy regarding her appearance. “You don’t owe it to anyone to tell us why you don’t look the same as what you did when you were a teenager or in your 20s,” she said.
Barrionuevo also emphasized that her intent is never to harm or tear down others when discussing potential cosmetic procedures on her TikTok page. “I really do mean the best,” she said. “So I apologize if this rubbed you the wrong way.”
