Pope Francis debuted on Instagram on Saturday, marking it his second social media account after joining Twitter in 2012.
The announcement was made by Dario Vigano, the Vatican’s prefect for communications, during an interview with Vatican radio in which he explained the pope would post his debut Instagram photo on Saturday, under the handle Fransciscus.
In February, the pope met with Kevin Systrom, the CEO and co-founder of Instagram.
“We spoke about the power of images to united people across different cultures and languages,” Systrom posted on his Instagram account. “It was by far one of the most memorable experiences of my life!”
Pope Francis is known as Pontifex on Twitter, and now has a following that reaches over eight million.
Francis uses his Twitter to share religious messages and words of wisdom with his followers.
“The greater the sin, the greater the love that must be shown by the Church to those who repent,” he tweeted on Friday.
