A Secret Service agent fired shots outside Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen’s home when suspects tried to break into empty parked vehicles. According to Secret Service communications chief Anthony Guglielmi, there is “no evidence to indicate anyone was struck” by the shots fired during the altercation, noting that there “was no threat to any protectees during this incident and no protectees were harmed.”
Despite no one being hit, the suspects rode off in their sedan from Yellen’s neighborhood in Northwest Washington around 1:30 a.m. and have yet to be caught.
It was not instantly clear if Yellen was home at the time of the shooting.
Guglielmi said the D.C. Metro Police Department is looking into the incident, which will be overseen by U.S. Attorney Matthew Graves’ office.
In recent years, other politicians have been involved in more serious carjackings. Just last year, Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-Texas) had his car stolen in October, claiming three people came out of “nowhere” and held him at gunpoint.
Last November, the Secret Service detail of President Biden’s granddaughter, Naomi Biden, fired on a man who attempted to carjack their vehicle in D.C.
While incidents like these continue to persist, thefts from cars have lowered 15% in the past year, according to D.C. police statistics.
