The Hulu series Pam & Tommy was among the many shows nominated for the 2022 Primetime Emmy awards, but it has also rubbed several people the wrong way because of the fact that it was created without the approval of Pamela Anderson or Tommy Lee.
Pam & Tommy fictionalizes the real account of the former couple, whose sex tape was widely distributed in the 90s without their consent. The show’s main leads, Sebastian Stan and Lily James, as well as Seth Rogen, who played Rand Gauthier, who stole and sold the sex tape, were all nominated for Emmys for their performances.
While the series didn’t disparage or blame Anderson or Lee, sources close to Anderson said seeing the show be released and positively received was “very painful for Pamela Anderson and for anyone that loves her.”
Stan, who played Tommy Lee, received some heat when he posted a celebratory Instagram photo about the Emmy nominations that came off as tone deaf. In part of the post, Stan wrote, “#PAMANDTOMMY is about a crime that took place without Consent. It was a crime on privacy, a crime on love, a crime on family, and a crime that were ALL a culprit of, as media and audience combined.”
This sentiment is perfectly acceptable and something we should be reckoning with, but it also rings less true when its writer is going for an Emmy Award win for playing a man who didn’t want this story to be told this way. He also likely profited well from the show’s success, which some online noted was similar to how Gauthier profited from leaking the sex tape in the person.
He even tagged both Anderson and Lee in the celebratory post, which also came off to some as insensitive.
Anderson is reportedly working on a documentary about the situation with Netflix. Her Instagram post of the note began by saying her life has been, “A thousand imperfections. A million misperceptions.” The handwritten note also said at the end. “Not a victim. But a survivor. And alive to tell the real story.”
