In one of the oddest stories to come from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the actor and director Sean Penn has been confirmed to be in the city’s capital of Kyiv shooting a documentary chronicling the invasion and the country’s response.
It seems Penn is there with assistance from the Ukrainian government, who told TMZ he arrived in Kyiv Thursday and that he was displaying “courage” by attempting to capture the conflict and is one of the “true friends of Ukraine.” He has apparently been preparing the documentary with assistance from the Ukrainian military since last November.
He was photographed Thursday at a press briefing in the Office of the President, and in a separate video, he was seen interviewing the country’s President Volodymyr Zelensky himself.
Penn is creating the documentary with Vice Studios. A Vice representative added in a statement that a documentary was in production, “in association with VICE World News and Endeavor Content,” but declined to confirm whether Penn was involved.
