Sean Penn and Netflix are battling over the streaming service’s release of The Day I Met El Chapo: The Kate del Castillo Story.
Penn’s lawyers are warning Netflix about releasing the program, a series about the drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman. The show implies that Penn helped the Department of Justice apprehend the infamous head of the Sinaloa drug cartel, which could put the actor in danger. “Blood will be on their hands if this film causes bodily harm,” said Penn’s lawyer Theodore J. Boutrous Jr.
Penn met with El Chapo in Oct. 2015 in an interview he detailed with Rolling Stone. Del Castillo, a Mexican actress, facilitated the meeting. Penn’s essay was published the day after the drug lord was recaptured in Mexico. Penn claims he had nothing to do with the recapture.
Still, many believe he worked with the DOJ on the case. Penn told Charlie Rose on his show that these rumors were “incorrect and could put him in danger.”
“It is reprehensible that, in their ongoing, relentless efforts to gain additional attention and publicity, Ms. del Castillo and her team (who have zero firsthand knowledge) have sought to create this profoundly false, foolish and reckless narrative,” Penn’s spokesman told The New York Times. “The notion that Mr. Penn or anyone on his behalf alerted DOJ (Department of Justice) to the trip is a complete fabrication and boldfaced lie. It never happened, nor would there have been any reason for it to have happened.”
Netflix replied that the actor was “given the opportunity on multiple occasions to participate” in the docuseries project but chose not to. The service also claims that no new information is contained in the show, but it gave del Castillo an opportunity to share her side of the story.
