Sean Malone, the Boston actor who appeared in Gone Baby Gone and The Fighter, has died from injuries suffered in a drowning accident. He was 54.
Malone’s death was announced Wednesday evening by the Boston Fire Department. “Sean Malone succumbed to his injuries this evening surrounded by his son Sean, parents and siblings at Boston Medical Center,” the BFD tweeted. “His family would like to thank the dedicated staff at BMC, Boston EMS, those that rescued Sean and friends for their support.”
Malone had been in a coma since July 20, when he swam out too far at a beach in South Boston. Off-duty firefighter Chris Flaherty had spotted Malone swimming and became concerned when he noticed his distance from the shore and decided to paddle out towards him.
When Flaherty got out to where he’d last seen Malone, the actor had sunk beneath the water. With the help of teens John Feeney, Joey Binda and Elliot Chavet, Flaherty was able to find Malone and bring him to shore and give him CPR until an ambulance arrived.
Malone memorably played Skinny Ray Likanski in Gone Baby Gone and Wolfie in The Fighter. He also starred alongside John Travolta in The Forger, playing bad guy Finn.
