Sean Avery, Ex-NFL Player, Quits Off Broadway Play

Sean Avery, the ex-NFL player who competed on season 18 of Dancing with the Stars, quit his off-Broadway play in dramatic fashion Tuesday night.

Sean Avery's Broadway Tantrum

Avery, 34, made a hasty exit on Tuesday from Negative Is Positive after proving to be a volatile person to work with. On Monday, he stormed out of rehearsals, and by the next day he had a full-on meltdown and walked away from the off-Broadway show. “He’s a playwright’s worst nightmare,” Negative writer Christy Smith-Sloman told Page Six.

What set Avery off on Tuesday? An offer of pizza. A stage manager named Natalie asked the former athlete if he wanted a slice of pizza. He said no, and then after mistakenly hearing Natalie call him an a–hole, proceeded to flip out, according to Smith-Sloman.

Natalie added, “He said I was ‘talking s–t‘ and said I was ‘so full of s–t That’s when I realized that I was dealing with a madman.”

After laying into Natalie, Avery turned his anger towards Negative Is Positive director Andreas Robertz. “Don’t you know who I am?!” Avery yelled, according to Robertz. “I think something snapped in him."

Following Avery's latest show, Smith-Sloman has no desire to have him come back to her play. “It’s a complete horror story . . . Avery had a complete meltdown in rehearsals and quit. He pretty much snapped,” Smith-Sloman told Page Six. “It’s unbelievable he would do this two days before we open. At this point I don’t want him to be a part of this production. He can’t call people pieces of s–t and say, ‘Do you know who I am?’ [He] can’t threaten people.”

When Negative Is Postivie makes its debut Thursday, Avery's role will be played by an understudy. As of yet, Avery has not commented on the alleged incident.
