Scarlett Johansson’s ‘Black Widow‘ Delayed To 2021

Many people have waited to see Scarlett Johansson star as the superhero Black Widow in her own standalone movie for quite some time now. After it was finally announced that Black Widow would be released as the first movie of phase four from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, people were excited to finally see the former Russian spy-turned-superhero take the spotlight. However, the film has suffered a number of delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Black Widow was originally supposed to be released on May 1, 2020. Unfortunately for moviegoers and fans of the character, the film was pushed back to November 6, 2020. However, due to the underperformance of Tenet, The Walt Disney Company and Marvel Studios decided to push the film back to May 7, 2021.

Fans were annoyed but hardly surprised at this news, a number of highly anticipated movies were delayed for a handful of months or pushed back to 2021 and even 2022, such as Wonder Woman 1984, No Time to Die, The Batman, Top Gun: Maverick and Avatar 2. 2020 will be the first year since 2009 in which no movies from the Marvel Cinematic Universe are released. Black Widow is directed by Cate Shortland and stars Johansson, Florence Pugh, David Harbour, William Hurt and Rachel Weisz. Other Marvel Cinematic Universe films have been pushed back along with Black Widow. This includes Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, EternalsThor: Love and Thunder, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and the sequel to Spider-Man: Far From Home.

While Black Widow being pushed back is unfortunate, people can still look forward to seeing the movie next year on May 7. Hopefully the film will not be pushed back any further and fans will be able to see Black Widow take center stage for the first time since she made her debut in Iron Man 2 in 2010.
