Scarlett Johansson
Scarlett Johansson spoke at the eighth annual Women in the World Summit on Thursday, and said that she is “so disappointed” with Ivanka Trump.
Trump had done an interview earlier in the day with CBS News’ Gayle King, in which she had asserted that she would rather deal with political issues from behind closed doors. “I don’t think that it will make me a more effective advocate to constantly articulate every issue publicly where I disagree,” Trump said. “And that’s okay. That means that I’ll take hits from some critics who say that I should take to the street. And then other people will in the long-term respect where I get to. But I think most of the impact I have, over time most people will not actually know about.”
Johansson took issue with this. “I thought to myself, ‘Well that’s empowering,'” the actress said sarcastically. “If you take a job as a public advocate, then you must advocate publicly.” Johansson saw Trump’s preference as an outdated version of female power. “This idea that behind a great man is a great woman, what about being in front of that person or next to that person, or standing on your own?” she asked. “It’s such an old-fashioned concept that to be a powerful woman you can’t appear to be concerned [with appearances]. Screw that, it’s so old-fashioned, it’s so uninspired and actually really cowardly.”
Johansson recently portrayed the first daughter in a Saturday Night Live skit, in which she did an advertisement for a new scent called “Complicit.” In Trump’s Interview with King, she admitted she did not know the definition the word. “If being complicit is wanting to be a force for good and to make a positive impact, then I’m complicit,” Trump said. “I don’t know what it means to be complicit, but I hope time will prove I have done a good job and that my father’s administration is the success I know it will be.”
