The DNC in Chicago took an unexpected turn Thursday night when two stars of the hit TV show Scandal made a surprise appearance during the lead-up to the vice president’s acceptance of the party’s presidential nomination.
Kerry Washington, who hosted the evening’s events, delivered a rousing speech that drew parallels between the show’s fictional world of political crisis management and the real-world challenges facing American democracy.
“You are the fixers,” Washington told the enthusiastic crowd, invoking her character Olivia Pope from the popular ABC drama. She emphasized the power of individual voters in shaping the country’s future, urging them to encourage their friends and family to participate in the electoral process.
The actress then invited attendees to record the moment on their phones, setting the stage for an unannounced cameo by her former co-star, Tony Goldwyn. Best known for his role as Fitzgerald Grant on Scandal, Goldwyn’s appearance elicited cheers from the convention floor.
Together, Washington and Goldwyn led the audience in a call-and-response chant of “When we fight, we win,” echoing the VP’s campaign slogan. The impromptu reunion concluded with Washington playfully dismissing Goldwyn from the stage, much to the delight of the crowd.
In a nod to the viral moment following the 2020 election, Washington recreated then-Sen. Harris’ phone call to president-elect, telling the audience, “We did it, Joe.”
The evening also featured a lighthearted yet educational moment when Washington invited Harris’s great-nieces, Amara and Leela, to demonstrate the correct pronunciation of the vice president’s first name. The young girls clearly articulated “Comma-Luh” for those who might struggle with or deliberately mispronounce it.
Adding to the star-studded lineup, singer Pink performed a stripped-down version of her hit song “What About Us,” accompanied by her 13-year-old daughter, Willow Sage Hart.
