Multiple sources have confirmed that ABC’s hit show Scandal will end after season seven.
The network has not yet made a formal announcement, but one can be expected very soon. The news comes with three episodes to go in the currently airing sixth season. Show creator Shonda Rhimes reportedly made the call to end the plot and ABC accepted the decision.
“I feel like there is a finite amount of Scandal to be told,” Rhimes has said previously. “So I know what the end of Scandal will be, and I feel really good about that. And I can see where the end point is. And I don’t think I’m going to change that.”
She also said that because of the heavily serialized, high-stakes drama, the show needs a shorter run, unlike her medical drama Grey’s Anatomy, which was renewed for its 14th season in Feb.
The series’ current season has been averaging 5.7 million total viewers, down 20% from season four. At its peak, the show pulled in 12 million viewers. Earlier this year, ABC president Channing Dungey spoke about the show’s future beyond its seventh season. “We have not really talked about what happens after that,” she said. “But I love the show, and I would happily keep the show on as long as she feels that she has creative runway to write the show.”
