Actor Sawyer Sweeton (left), who was best known for starring in Everybody Loves Raymond, died Thursday in a suicide attempt. He was 19.
Sweeten’s death was confirmed by his manager to ABC News. Following the news of his tragic death, Sweeten’s family released a statement.
“This morning a terrible family tragedy has occurred,” reads the statement. “We are devastated to report that our beloved brother, son, and friend, Sawyer Sweeten, took his own life. He was weeks away from his 20th birthday. At this sensitive time, our family requests privacy and we beg of you to reach out to the ones you love.”
Sawyer Sweeten played Ray (Ray Romano) and Debra Barone’s (Patricia Heaton) son Geoffrey Barrone, while his twin brother Sullivan Sawyer, played his twin brother Michael on Everybody Loves Raymond. Sawyer and Sullivan’s older sister Madylin Sweeten played their older sister on the show, Ally.
Madylin Sweeten posted on Facebook following her brother’s passing, writing, “At this time I would like to encourage everyone to reach out to the ones you love. Let them have no doubt of what they mean to you.”
Upon learning of the death of their young costar, Romano, Heaton and Doris Roberts – who played matriarch Marie Barone – expressed their shock and sadness.
“I’m shocked, and terribly saddened, by the news about Sawyer. He was a wonderful and sweet kid to be around,” Romano said in a statement. “Just a great energy whenever he was there. My heart breaks for him, his family, and his friends during this very difficult time.”
