This year marked history for the Black Lives Matter movement, as the entire world stood with black Americans to protest against police brutality after the death of George Floyd. According to Barack Obama, Sasha and Malia were part of those historic protests.
The two college-aged daughters of Barack and Michelle Obama were very eager to get involved with the Black Lives Matter movement after seeing the outrage and change happening across the country. While promoting A Promised Land, his new book, in an interview with People, the former president revealed that his daughters helped organize a number of protests without making their actions known to the public.
“They had a very clear sense of what was right and what was wrong and their own agency and the power of their voice and the need to participate,” he said. “Malia and Sasha found their own ways to get involved with the demonstrations and activism that you saw with young people this summer, without any prompting from Michelle and myself, on their own initiative.”
Barack added that the former first daughters did ask for a bit of advice. For the most part, though, their plans were of their own volition.
“They didn’t need to be encouraged,” he said.
