Sarah Silverman was among the celebrities who spoke at the Democratic National Convention Monday night – and had some choice words for some hecklers in the audience.
Silverman said she had “felt the Bern” during the primary season, endorsing Bernie Sanders and doing what she could to inspire others to vote for the Vermont senator over Hillary Clinton. However, with the primary ending with Clinton as the obvious winner, Silverman has shifted her support to her. When she took to the stage at the DNC, Silverman maintained her deep affection for Sanders – but was unwavering her her support for Clinton to be the next president of the United States.
“Hillary heard the passion of the people, the people behind Bernie, and brought those passions into the party’s platform, and that, that is the process of democracy at its very best, and it’s very cool to see,” Silverman said, with comedian-turned-senator Al Franken at her side. “Hillary is our Democratic nominee, and I will proudly vote for her. It’s so inspiring. It’s so inspiring, just a few years ago, she was a secretary, and now she’s going to be president. I mean, c’mon. She’s like the only person ever to be overqualified for a job — as the president.”
Silverman continued, “I tell you this, I will vote for Hillary with gusto, as I continue to be inspired and moved to action by the ideals set forth by Bernie, who will never stop fighting for us. I am proud to be a part of Bernie’s movement and a vital part of that movement, and a vital part of that movement is making sure Hillary Clinton is the next president of the United States.
After finishing her prepared remarks, Silverman was urged to “stretch,” as the next act – a performance of “Bridge Over Troubled Water” by Paul Simon – was not yet ready to begin. In the dead time, Sanders’ supporters booed Silverman for backing Clinton and chanted “Bernie!” In an unscripted moment, Silverman chastised those refusing to follow her and Sanders himself in backing Clinton.
“To the Bernie or bust people,” Silverman said, “You’re being ridiculous.” For the off-the-cuff remark, Silverman got enough cheers from Clinton supporters to drown out the boos.
