Comedian Sarah Silverman publicly apologized to Paris Hilton for making jokes about her time in prison at the 2007 MTV Movie Awards. At the time, Hilton attended the award ceremony hours before going to jail for violating probation on a DUI driving conviction the year prior.
Silverman made jokes about the fact she was going to prison.
“I heard that to make her feel comfortable in prison, the guards are going to paint the bars to look like penises,” Silverman said during the award ceremony. “I just worry that she’s gonna break her teeth on those things.”
Earlier this week, Hilton referenced how she felt at the time on her podcast, This Is Paris Podcast. She said, “it was so painful, especially with what I was going through in my life, to then have people be so mean about it. It was really hard.”
“To sit in the audience with her just literally publicly humiliating me, being so mean, so cruel,” Hilton added. “I was sitting there wanting to die.”
Silverman responded on the March 4 episode of her podcast, The Sarah Silverman Podcast. She said she remembered the crowd going crazy the jokes at the time and being happy they landed. Despite this, she said she regretted the jokes almost immediately after making them.
“I remember spotting her in the audience, I really do, and I remember seeing that look on her face and my heart sank. There was a person under there,” Silverman said. “A couple days later I wrote her a letter apologizing, felt awful and I never heard back. I certainly wouldn’t expect to anyways.”
Silverman said she didn’t know that Hilton never received the apology letter.
“So here I am 14 years later telling you Paris, that I am really sorry,” Silverman said. “I was then, and I am much more completely, and with far more understanding, I think, now. I can’t imagine what you were going through at that time.”
Hilton accepted Silverman’s apology on another episode of her podcast. She said she was shocked, but pleasantly surprised.
“[Silverman] was so genuine and so sweet and it really moved me. I felt emotional hearing it and I could tell she really did mean what she said when she was apologizing,” said Hilton. “Thank you, I really, really appreciate you doing that.”
Last month, Silverman said she regretted making jokes about Britney Spears in 2007. She said this after the release of the documentary Framing Britney Spears, which shed light on Spears’ career and relationship with the press.
