Sarah Hyland Obtains Temporary Restraining Order Against Ex Matt Prokop, Claiming Domestic Abuse
Sarah Hyland, the Modern Family star, received a temporary restraining order against her ex-boyfriend Matt Prokop, who she claims physically and verbally abused her.
Sarah Hyland Claims Prokop Choked Her
Hyland, 23, who stars as Haley Dunphy on Modern Family, dated Prokop, 24, for five years and appeared onscreen together in Modern Family and in the Disney Channel Original Movie Geek Charming.
When couple broke up in August, Hyland released a statement calling the split “amicable.”
However, court documents filed by Hyland state that the two broke up after Prokop choked Hyland during an argument about an outfit she was wearing in May. Hyland claims that Prokop pushed her up against the car and choked her.
“His grip was so tight that I could not breathe or speak. I was scared and in fear of my life,” Hyland says in the documents obtained by TMZ.
Prokop Allegedly Threatened Hyland After Split
Hyland then called her Modern Family mother, Julie Bowen for help, saying she wanted to “peacefully end the relationship.” When Prokop came home to find Hyland and a group of supporters, he allegedly “ran outside into the backyard and began screaming.”
Hyland goes on to claim that Prokop threw a lighter at her, prompting Bowen to send her away for her safety. Hyland also says that he threatened to burn down her home and threatened her dog, Barkley.
Following their split, Hyland contends that Prokop continued to contact her and threaten her, claiming he “relentlessly bombarded me with vile, threatening and emotionally disturbing texts and voice mails including his own suicide threats.”
Temporary Restraining Order Granted
The court filing also states that Prokop began rehab in August, but was released on Sept. 21, and doctors at the facility thought it would be best if she got a restraining order against her ex. An L.A. judge has granted a temporary restraining order on Sept. 19, forbidding Prokop from being within 100 yards of Hyland and her dog.
“On September 19, 2014, Ms. Hyland obtained a Domestic Violence Temporary Restraining Order against Matthew Prokop. The documents filed speak for themselves. Out of respect for the court, the process and all parties, I have advised Ms. Hyland not to comment on the matter. We request that you respect the parties’ privacy during this time,” Hyland’s attorney, Lee A. Sherman, said in a statement.
A court hearing deciding whether or not the restraining order will be extended will take place Oct. 10.
