Sarah Brightman Cancels $52 Million Trip To Space With Space Adventures

Sarah Brightman officially announced that she is postponing her planned tourist trip into space with Space Adventures, Ltd, on Wednesday.

Brightman, a British soprano, has been very open about her dream of going into space and traveling to the International Space Station (ISS) with Space Adventures, but it seems that dream is being put on hold. “Ms. Brightman said that for personal family reasons her intentions have had to change and she is postponing her cosmonaut training and flight plans at this time,” reads a statement posted on Brightman’s official Facebook page. Brightman did not release any further details on the reasons behind the postponement of her trip.

The singer began training for her space tourism trip in January at Russia’s Star City, and has been keeping fans updated on her progress via social media. “I feel very fortunate to be fulfilling my dream of traveling to Space. I’m excited to say, training is going well,” she wrote in March.

Brightman was scheduled to take flight on Sept. 1, 2015, aboard a Russian Soyuz spacecraft and spend 10 days on the ISS – the entire trip would have reportedly cost her a cool $52 million.

Space Adventures, the private company organizing the trip and selling seats to the first generation of space tourists, released a statement in support of Brightman’s exit. “We’ve seen firsthand her dedication to every aspect of her spaceflight training and to date, has passed all of her training and medical tests. We applaud her determination and we’ll continue to support her as she pursues a future spaceflight opportunity,” said Space Adventures Chairman Eric Anderson.
