Sandusky Case News: Penn State President To Stand Trial

Jerry Sandusky, who was convicted of 45 counts of child sexual abuse, is currently serving out a 30-60 year sentence behind bars, but proceedings pertaining to his case are far from over. On Tuesday, Penn State’s former president, Graham Spanier (pictured), ex-vice president Gary Shultz and ex-athletic director Tim Curley were ordered to stand trial for the cover-up of Sandusky’s repeated abuses.

During a preliminary hearing, prosecutors, including lead state prosecutor Bruce Breemer, made the case that the three former administrators should stand trial, reported CBS Sports. Among their arguments, was that the trio had conspired to sweep the reported episode of Sandusky engaging in inappropriate behavior with a boy in the locker room showers under the rug. Also mentioned was the fact that it was relatively common knowledge that the former assistant coach was investigated for showering with boys three years prior in 1998.

Among the evidence levied against Spanier, Shultz and Curly are a string of emails exchanged between them in which the 1998 and 2001 incidents are discussed. Attorneys for the defendants have used strong language to paint the charges against their clients as unfounded. Curley’s lawyer, Caroline Roberto, even went after Mike McQueary, who claimed to witness the 2001 incident while he was a Penn State football graduate assistant, implying he’d exaggerated what occurred and often changes up his story.

While testifying in Sandusky’s trial, Spanier was the only one of the three to claim complete ignorance to Sandusky’s inappropriate behavior. All three have been charged with endangering the welfare of children, failure to properly report suspected abuse, conspiracy, obstruction and perjury.
