After the devastating earthquake and tsunami hit Japan last week, many of Hollywood's biggest stars have made strides to aid the country and its victims, most notably, Sandra Bullock. The Academy Award-winning actress has donated $1 million to the American Red Cross to aid Japan relief efforts, CNN reports.
Bullock reportedly made the contribution on behalf of her family; it is the largest donation the organization has received since news of the disaster broke last week. "This contribution is vitally important as the Red Cross works to provide critical assistance and essential relief items in this time of urgent need for so many people in Japan," the organization said. Bullock similarly donated $1 million to Haiti earthquake relief last year.
Demi Lovato has also donated $1 million to Japan, reports CeleBuzz. The Sonny with A Chance star, who has returned to the public eye after a stint in a rehab facility for emotional and personal issues last fall, has been active in promoting Japan relief of late, and was spotted with a Japanese flag in Los Angeles adorned with the words "Please Help."
Other celebrities are using social media to generate donations to aid the fallen country. Lady Gaga, Katy Perry and Diddy have used their Twitter accounts to encourage people to donate to the Red Cross and other charitable organizations. Their method appears to be working—according to the Red Cross, there have been $2.6 million in donations received via text message since last Friday. —EMILY EXTON
