Samsung announced its latest development in VR technology back in April. According to Channel News, some legal branding paperwork filed in South Korea surfaced and suggests the headset might be named after Homer’s epic poem about Odysseus’s long journey home. Tech Times reports that two logos were also discovered in the paperwork, including a stylized ‘VR’ and ‘O’ with a line going through it.
Channel News wrote that the standalone headset “is expected to provide a more high-end experience. It’s expected to feature positional tracking technology and compete directly with gaming focused virtual reality devices like the HTC Vive and Facebook’s Oculus.”
This isn’t Samsung’s first foray into VR technology. The company’s Gear VR is a headset that allows users to convert Galaxy smartphones into a mobile virtual reality experience. This, however, is one of its drawbacks. Both the HTC Vive and Oculus do not require a companion mobile device to work. Samsung developed the Gear VR with help from the folks over at Oculus. The Odyssey won’t require a phone, PC or gaming console to use it and that might be its main appeal to more mainstream users.
The Samsung Odyssey is expected to offer a better experience than the Oculus Rift. But for now, the destination at the end of the journey is still unclear. Little has been released about actual specifications of the product.
No news yet on when the standalone headset will be available, but more information may be unveiled at Samsung’s Galaxy Unpacked event in New York City on Aug. 2.
