Samsung’s ball-shaped camera is one of a list of innovative products the company announced this week. The new Samsung Gear 360 will be available in the U.S. on Aug. 19. It’s been out in South Korea and Singapore since April.
The little camera, measuring 66.7 x 56.2x 60 mm, looks almost like a mini robot. It’s portable, weighs only 153 grams with the battery and comes with an easy-to-connect tripod. This particular device supports both microSD cards and batteries. Lenses are located in the back and front of the camera to capture a 360-degree field of view. It can also be used in single lens mode. Users will appreciate its powerful features. The Gear 360’s certified IP53 status ensures its protection against dust and water sprays and allows for it to be used almost anywhere. The compact camera can record high-resolution videos in 3840 x 1920 and 25.9-megapixel images and stills, as well as 30-megapixel photos that create panoramic images at 7776 x 3888. Its F2.0-lens is fast and works in lower light and each fish-eye lens covers a 195-degree angle.
When paired with other Samsung Galaxy smartphones using Bluetooth, users can use their screen as a remote viewfinder or manage files stored in the camera. Samsung developed the camera so users can share their videos and images with others. Users can upload views of their locations and photospheres by pairing the Gear 360 with Google Street View. Live view mode allows users to shoot and stitch video footage together for easy editing and sharing on their smartphone or PC.
The Gear 360 is being hailed for its VR capabilities. TechRadar reported, “With the press of a button, I was able to build my own virtual reality world…thanks to its dual fisheye lenses that stitch together 360 video and capture 30PM still photos.” In addition to the 360-degree video and photos, users play around with time lapse and looping video modes.
All in all the Gear 360 is a great introduction to creative possibilities a VR camera possesses.
